Carpets of Distinction

2012 marked the centenary year of the Dovecot Tapestry Studios in Edinburgh. As part of the celebrations Panel collaborated with the studio on an interdisciplinary collaboration that explored the skill of making, and its impact across art forms, through a collection of new textile works, a showroom and associated public programme.

John Byrne, Ruth Ewan, Nick Evans, Alasdair Gray, Nicolas Party, Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan each designed and created a limited edition hand–tufted rug in collaboration with Rug-maker Jonathan Cleaver.

Working with the Stoddard-Templeton Archive as inspiration and representing a broad range of concerns and distinct in their design, the hand-tufted rugs take inspiration from the history of carpet design through reference to traditional motif and pattern as well as practical and aesthetic function. Each rug is skillfully crafted using complex mixes of colour and a range of finishing methods. Such sensitivity has become a distinguishing feature of Dovecot’s output.

Carpets of Distinction is a partnership with Dovecot and the Stoddard-Templeton Archive at the University of Glasgow and Glasgow School of Art.
